In keeping with Michigan State University’s land
grant philosophy, the museum has a public as well as institutional
mission to serve students, faculty and the community through
opportunities to experience the fine arts.
School Tours
Kresge Art Museum offers docent-guided tours to area schools.
Tours are designed to stimulate students’ interest in
art and expand their critical thinking skills through a variety
of activities. Special programs and thematic tours that relate
to the school curriculum have been prepared, or talk to the museum education curator to help design a specific tour.

All activities last 30 minutes.
Art of the Americas
5th Grade
Length: 1 hour
By examining and discussing works of art, students will learn
about the Americas (North America, South America, Meso-America, and Canada). Portraits, landscapes, photography, and sculpture are used to show the development of the Americas.
Art and the Humanities
Grades 6-12
Length: 1 or 1½ hours
Tours for middle and high school students coordinate with
history, English, language, social studies or art curricula.
Docents offer a PowerPoint presentation and question-and-answer period.
A tour of works of art in the museum forms the basis for a
hands-on student project, which reinforces the tour subject.

Scheduling
Docent-guided tours are offered from mid-September through
early June on Tuesday through Friday mornings and selected
afternoons. Limit: 35 students. One adult must accompany every
ten students. To schedule, call Cari Wolfe at (517) 353-9834
during business hours at least one month in advance. Due to
space limitations, all group tours must be scheduled in advance,
including those without docent guidance.
Bus Subsidy
Kresge Art Museum is able to subsidize half the transportation
costs of your K-12 museum tour (up to $45). Please request
a bus subsidy when you make your reservation. A reimbursement
form will be provided to you. Send this form and a copy of
the transportation bill to the museum within two months of
your tour (or by the end of June for year-end tours). Reimbursement
requests cannot be honored beyond these deadlines. The Kresge Art Museum bus subsidy program is supported by the Dart Foundation
and the Kresge Art Museum Education Endowment Fund.

help prepare for visiting the museum.

A Day of the Arts at Michigan State University
